FAQ

Legal translation questions

Is legal translation the same as certified translation? +
Not exactly. Legal translation refers to the type of content — documents with legal effects. Certified translation refers to whether it carries a sworn translator's seal and signature. A legal translation may or may not be certified depending on its intended use.
Is the translation valid before Mexican courts? +
Yes, when certified by a sworn translator authorized by the State of Jalisco Council of the Judiciary or the Supreme Court of Justice. For recognition in other states, an apostille or additional legalization may be required.
Can you translate common law terminology into the Mexican system? +
Yes. This is precisely the difference of having an attorney supervising the translation. Common law concepts (trust, escrow, injunction, etc.) are correctly adapted to the equivalent or closest concept in Mexican civil law, with an explanatory note when there is no exact equivalent.
How much does legal document translation cost? +
Depends on length and complexity. We quote in 2 hours after reviewing the document.
Can I request urgent translation? +
Yes. For documents that need to be submitted before a court with an upcoming deadline, we check express service availability.

The difference of having an attorney in the translation

Translating 'shall' as 'deberá' is easy. Understanding whether that obligation is a condition precedent, a condition subsequent, or a simple deadline — that requires legal training. At LINGUAS, the attorney supervises every legal translation so the terminology is legally correct, not just linguistically acceptable.

For documents requiring official validity, we coordinate with sworn translators authorized by the State of Jalisco Council of the Judiciary and the Supreme Court of Justice of the State of Jalisco.
